Colleagues from the MRC/ Arthritis Research UK Centre for Integrated research into Musculoskeletal Ageing (CIMA), and from the MRC/ Arthritis Research UK Centre for Musculoskeletal Ageing Research (CMAR), gathered in Nottingham for a joint conference earlier this month to share their research and continue to develop collaborative links.

The conference comprised themed presentations from researchers and students within each Centre, covering topics including the Basic Mechanisms of Ageing, Monitoring and Assessment of Age-related Musculoskeletal Decline, Interventions to Reduce Musculoskeletal Ageing, Motor Control and Motor Neuroscience, and Systems Biology Approaches to Musculoskeletal Ageing.

Guest presentations from esteemed speakers in the field of musculoskeletal ageing research were given by Dr Nir Barzilai (Albert Einstein College of Medicine), Dr Ronenn Roubenoff (Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research), and Dr James Kirkland (Mayo Clinic).

A poster session was held to further communicate the range of research being undertaken by both Centres and to facilitate further networking and potential collaborations between colleagues.

PhD students from both Centres and MRes students currently undertaking the CIMA MRes in Musculoskeletal Ageing presented posters and were also treated to ‘Ageing Masterclasses’ delivered by Professor Janet Lord (University of Birmingham) and Professor Peter Clegg (University of Liverpool).
